On the evening of January 23rd,Episode 3”City Pulse,” part of the fourth season of the documentary series “Great Nation Construction,” jointly produced by China Central Television (CCTV) and China Metallurgical Group Corporation (MCC), premiered on CCTV’s Finance Channel (CCTV-2). Through the active promotion and planning by the Party Committee Propaganda Department of MCC, the program vividly showcased several major utility tunnel projects constructed by China MCC20 Group Corporation in the Greater Bay Area. These include the Meiguan Expressway, Dameisha and Xiaomeisha, Airport Phase I, Airport Phase II, and the Shenzhen Metro Line 13 co-constructed utility tunnel projects. These projects represent the vital underground “l(fā)ifelines” of the city.
Exploring the code of urban operation, the episode delved into how laying foundations beneath the surface energizes the pulse of the city. While the visible transformation of the city captures attention, the invisible yet robust underground networks provide essential support. These projects enable the coordinated planning and utilization of urban transportation networks, contributing to the creation of a safe, resilient, and livable city. The resilience of a city’s “l(fā)ifelines” is a testament to its hidden wisdom and ingenuity. “City Pulse” employed the unique perspective and stunning visuals of a national media platform to highlight China MCC20’s deep expertise and innovative breakthroughs in the field of utility tunnels.
Shenzhen, a globally renowned star city in the Greater Bay Area, currently leads the nation in the total planned mileage of utility tunnels. The city’s pioneering spirit continues to thrive in the new wave of smart urban renewal. From community micro-renovations to major urban arteries, the flexible and diverse forms of utility tunnel co-construction are weaving a three-dimensional future for the city. Since winning the bid for the Shenzhen Apollo Future Industry City project in 2016, China MCC20 has continuously overcome challenges and introduced innovations, further expanding its footprint in the utility tunnel sector. To date, China MCC20 has undertaken 39 utility tunnel projects in the Pearl River Delta, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, and Central China, with a cumulative contract value exceeding 46.5 billion yuan and a total length surpassing 300 kilometers. This solidifies its position as a true leader in underground utility tunnel construction. Among these, Shenzhen hosts the largest number of representative utility tunnel projects, including but not limited to the Meiguan Expressway, Dameisha and Xiaomeisha, Airport Phase I, Airport Phase II, and Shenzhen Metro Line 13 co-constructed utility tunnel projects, which were the focus of CCTV’s filming.
Located in Longhua District, Shenzhen, the Meiguan Expressway Project encompasses the renovation and expansion of the original expressway, the construction of new auxiliary roads on both sides (5.73 kilometers for the main road), a comprehensive utility tunnel spanning 11,754 meters, and the construction of 21 bridges. It is the first project in China to fully integrate utility tunnels with expressway construction. The project aims to create Shenzhen’s first urban expressway with dual underground utility tunnels along the city’s north-south central axis, as well as the city’s first project to implement full lifecycle BIM design. Upon completion, the renovated Meiguan Expressway is expected to become the “Shennan Avenue” of Shenzhen’s central axis, effectively separating through traffic from urban traffic, and rapid transit from slow-moving traffic. This will significantly enhance the rapid transit connectivity of Shenzhen, particularly its central region, with external areas.
Located in the Xiaomeisha area of Yantian District, Shenzhen, the project includes the construction of utility tunnels, roads, bridges, sponge city systems, and soil conservation works. Upon completion, it will promote urban functional transformation, improve land use efficiency, enhance the comprehensive tourism services of the resort area, and create a high-quality coastal resort. It will also further elevate tourism service standards and improve public transportation capabilities in the area.
Situated in the Airport New Town of Bao’an District, Shenzhen, the Airport Phase I Project is a large-scale initiative involving 19 municipal roads, eight of which are equipped with utility tunnels. The bridges and road tunnels utilize prefabricated composite assembly technology, with a total utility tunnel length of 16.92 kilometers. This project serves as a critical municipal road infrastructure supporting the Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center, a major landmark project. It is Shenzhen’s first utility tunnel project to implement prefabricated composite assembly technology.
Located in Bao’an District, Shenzhen, the Airport Phase II Project connects with the Phase I utility tunnel of Airport New Town, with a total length of 9.75 kilometers. The utility tunnel is a vital component of Bao’an District’s “one vertical, one horizontal, three zones, and multiple branches” underground utility tunnel layout system. It serves as the east-west trunk utility tunnel within the Airport New Town area and is a crucial part of the power transmission corridor from the Conglin Substation, Shenzhen’s core power source, to the power load centers in the Greater Airport Area and northwestern Bao’an. This project will provide reliable power supply to the Greater Airport Area and northwestern Bao’an, alleviating pressure on the outer power grid and ensuring stable electricity for key construction zones such as Airport New Town.
Located in Nanshan and Bao’an Districts, Shenzhen, Shenzhen Metro Line 13 Co-Constructed Utility Tunnel Project primarily consists of underground space development and the co-constructed utility tunnel for Metro Line 13, as well as utility tunnels along Shengping Road, Ruyi Road, and Tianxin Avenue in Shiyan Subdistrict, Bao’an District (totaling 9.4 kilometers in length). The underground space development is a comprehensive project constructed concurrently with Shenzhen Metro Line 13, integrating underground pedestrian systems, commercial and leisure facilities, and technology exhibition spaces. It will enhance the commercial infrastructure of the underground space in the Science and Technology Park area. Upon completion, it will become the world’s largest and longest underground space development project integrated with urban rail transit.
